Government to focus on collecting taxes from high income sectors

Finance Minister Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada said the government would focus on escalating tax collections from high income-generating sectors.

The government would not unnecessarily focus on meeting the revenue collection targets, but follow strict measures for the enforcement of related laws, he said at a programme organised here on Sunday on the occasion of the 78th International Customs Day.

As he said, citizens would be made to pay taxes in accordance with the law, but would never be left suffering in the name of it.

Stating that it was the responsibility of a good citizen to pay taxes to the State, the Minister said the government was concentrated on collecting inland revenues than customs duties.

He took time to call on the business community to fight market malpractices and to pay attention towards ensuring quality of goods.

On the occasion, he shared the government's plans of enriching the domestic customs system with technology and digitalising it.

General Director of the Department of Customs Suman Dahal said the maximum use of technology was given priority in the customs system to make it more transparent.

January 26 each year is observed as the International Customs Day.  The Department collects 50 percent of the total revenue compilation.
