According to the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, the government has taken the decision by exercising the special jurisdiction given by the sub-section (3) of Section 24 of the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049. The department has taken the decision considering the increasing number of vehicles on the road, pollution, pressure of vehicles, condition of the road and public welfare. Now, the department can issue an order to suspend the registration of any vehicle.
The ban on vehicle registration will also apply to public electronic vehicles (EV). Apparently, the government has decided to stop the registration process for some time in order to reduce the import of electric vehicles. According to the Department, the decision was taken as excessive air pollution, pressure of vehicles on the roads and traffic jam have added to the difficulties in commuting.
The letter also states that the existing system should be managed by stopping new registrations to address the uncomfortable situation facing by the public transport and the entire transport sector due to the rising price of fuel.
