PAC meeting: MPs emphasise on transparency in customs tax

Transparency of the tax system, policy stability and improvement of customs management regarding the customs clearance process of electric vehicles (EVs) were the main topics discussed in today's meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

The committee members emphasised the need to review those matters from the customs clearance of the EVs and changes in tax rates to the customs evaluation process. They gave various suggestions for customs management and improvement.

Aaren Rai said that people should be given clear information about the tax provisions on electric vehicles.

Buddha Ratna Maharjan expressed that the country's prosperity is not possible by just imposing taxes on the people while Mahendra Bahadur Shahi suggested focusing on customs infrastructure improvements and other areas since transparency in business is important.

Yagya Bahadur Bogati pointed out the need to make the customs office more efficient, while Ganesh Singh Thagunna said that a parliamentary investigation is needed on the tax exemptions given to electric vehicles.

Rukesh Ranjit said that the tax policy should be business-friendly and Bikram Thapa emphasised the effective implementation of the budget.

Govinda Panthi mentioned that regular monitoring and a strong structure are needed to control customs evasion.

Manish Jha emphasised that the inspection, tax determination and revenue collection of import-export items should be systematic. (RSS)
