Flash Floods In Rasuwa Trigger Sharp Price Drop In Hydropower Stocks

Share prices of hydropower companies listed on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) fell sharply on Wednesday following devastating flash floods in the Rasuwa district that damaged several hydropower projects and transmission infrastructure.

The impact of the disaster hit several affected power developers immediately, pushing stock prices to lower circuit limits:
  • Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Company: Hit the negative circuit limit (-10%).
  • Mailung Khola Hydropower Company: Hit the negative circuit limit (-10%).
  • Trishuli Hydropower Company: Dropped 13%.
  • Upper Mailung Khola Hydropower Company: Declined by over 11.5%.
  • Sanjen Hydropower Company: Plunged by more than 11%.
Market Overview and Sub-Group Losses
The benchmark NEPSE index shed 35.92 points on Wednesday to close at 2,558.35. Broad market sentiment weakened across the board, with indices for all 13 sub-groups ending in the red.

  • Non-Life Insurance Sub-Group: Experienced the largest drop, losing 3.90%.
  • Hydropower Sub-Group: Fell by 3.00%.
  • Finance, Investment, Life Insurance, and Others: Decreased by over 1.00% each.
The sensitive index slid by 6.00 points, the float index dropped 2.61 points, and the sensitive float index dipped 2.09 points.

Trading Turnover and Outliers
Despite the broader market slump, overall trading volume saw an increase. A total of 13.58 million shares were traded across 61,442 transactions, generating a turnover of Rs 4.77 billion.

  • Chilime Hydropower Company Ltd. topped the market in overall turnover, recording trades worth Rs 205.6 million.
  • Sanima Middle Tamor Hydropower followed with Rs 195 million in turnover.
  • Sahas Energy recorded trading volume exceeding Rs 160 million.
Defying the market downturn, Sarvottam Paints hit the positive circuit level for the second consecutive session, advancing by Rs 158.20 to close at Rs 1,212.90. Upper Hewakhola Hydropower Company also posted gains, rising 10.5% during the session.
