A significant barrier lake has formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers in Nepal, presenting a high risk of a breach over the coming days, according to China's Ministry of Water Resources.

As of Thursday morning, the lake's water volume was estimated at 2 million cubic meters, with water already overflowing. China Central Television reported that an additional 3 million cubic meters of water is projected to flow into the lake over the next three days, sharply increasing the danger of a burst. In response, the Chinese water ministry is closely monitoring the situation and running flood simulations and analyses to evaluate potential breach scenarios and support emergency rescue operations.

The development follows a devastating mudslide originating on the Nepalese side of the border that struck Gyirong Port in Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region. The disaster has prompted a large-scale mobilization of Chinese rescue forces, including emergency responders, the People's Liberation Army, engineering units, telecom operators, and relief organizations. Rescue teams are deploying personnel, aircraft, specialized equipment, and supplies into the area while navigating treacherous terrain, continuous rainfall, and heightened risks of secondary disasters.

Official reports confirmed that as of Thursday morning, three people have died and two have been rescued from the disaster area. Efforts remain focused on searching for 558 people who are currently missing, including 260 foreign nationals.
