NIA Automates Surveyor Assignment for Faster & Transparent Claims Processing

Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA) has initiated trial runs for an automated system designed to assign surveyors for insurance claim damage assessments.

The initiative aims to eliminate traditional manual selection methods, which have long faced criticism over lack of transparency, preferential hiring by insurance companies, and uneven workload distribution among surveyors.

System Mechanics and Criteria

Under the new system, once an insurance claim is registered, the software will automatically evaluate and select a suitable surveyor based on a strict set of objective parameters:

  • Expertise: Matching specific claim types—such as vehicle accidents—with qualified specialists.
  • Location and Availability: Ensuring the surveyor is accessible in the relevant geographical area and immediately available to take on the work.
  • Seniority and Portfolio: Factoring in professional experience and current workload.
Current regulations cap individual surveyors at five active jobs and institutional surveyors at up to 10 jobs. The new automated framework will actively track completed assignments, current workloads, and availability to prevent work concentration among a select few.

Implementation and Training

Managing Director of NIA, Sushil Dev Subedi stated that data for all 680 registered surveyors—including 88 institutional entities—has been successfully integrated into the platform, with testing officially launched on September 28.

As part of the rollout, 36 key personnel, including IT and claims chiefs from non-life insurance companies, have completed online training. Subsequent training phases will be extended to the surveyors themselves. The Authority also plans to integrate reinsurance companies into the system.

Boosting Security and Efficiency

Prior to full deployment, the NIA will conduct rigorous security evaluations, including firewall and vulnerability assessments and penetration testing (VAPTP), to ensure system stability.

By removing manual intervention from the selection process, the Authority expects to significantly reduce claim processing times and operational costs, curb customer disputes, and establish greater accountability across Nepal's non-life insurance sector.
