Nepal’s life insurance sector demonstrated steady momentum during the opening two months of the current fiscal year 2083/84, pulling in a staggering Rs 41.29 billion in total insurance premiums, according to the latest data released by the Nepal Insurance Authority (NEA).

The robust collection was pooled from 14 mainstream life insurance companies, three specialized micro life insurers, and the foreign employment temporary life insurance pool. A closer look at the figures reveals that renewal premiums form the bedrock of the sector's financial volume, accounting for Rs 32.59 billion, while first-time insurance premiums contributed Rs 8.69 billion. Monthly performance peaked particularly strong in August alone, during which the sector amassed Rs 14.66 billion.

Company Standouts and Market Share

Nepal Life Insurance retained its dominant market leadership, emerging at the top of the leaderboard with an impressive collection of Rs 10.58 billion—capturing roughly 25.6 percent of the entire market. The company’s haul includes Rs 2.09 billion in first premiums and Rs 8.48 billion in renewals.

National Life Insurance Company (NLIC) followed closely, while the government-owned National Life Insurance Company secured the third spot with a solid collection of Rs 4.41 billion (with NLIC earning Rs 4.85 billion in the broader comparative standings). Meanwhile, LIC Nepal brought in Rs 3.67 billion, and Himalayan Life Insurance secured Rs 3.59 billion. On the other end of the spectrum, Sun Nepal Life Insurance recorded the lowest collection among major players at Rs 77.72 crore.

Geographic Disparities in Business Concentration

Geographically, the data underscores a sharp concentration of insurance business within Bagmati Province, which single-handedly generated Rs 19.57 billion—representing 47.4 percent of the country's total premiums.

Lumbini Province trailed far behind in second place with Rs 5.93 billion, followed by Koshi Province with Rs 4.88 billion, Gandaki Province with Rs 4.01 billion, and Madhesh Province with Rs 3.50 billion. Lower down the regional scale, Sudurpaschim Province recorded Rs 2.22 billion, while Karnali Province registered the lowest provincial collection at Rs 1.16 billion.

Interestingly, while Bagmati leads in monetary volume, Koshi Province topped the charts in sheer policy volume by issuing 8.13 lakh insurance policies, largely propelled by a surge in short-term life insurance policies. Bagmati followed with 6,04,000 issued policies.

Schemes and Micro-Insurance Sectors

Traditional term life insurance plans continued to command the highest participation among citizens, raking in Rs 19.15 billion. Other notable contributions included Rs 7.52 billion from standard term schemes, Rs 5.83 billion from child-focused term insurance, Rs 4.48 billion from modified term life insurance, Rs 1.42 billion from single-premium policies, and Rs 83.58 crore from lifetime insurance. Temporary life insurance policies contributed Rs 26.29 crore.

In the micro-insurance segment, specialized companies—Guardian, Crest, and Liberty—collected Rs 19.7 crore up to mid-September. When combined with micro-insurance policies issued by traditional life insurers, the sub-sector's total premium climbed to Rs 58.90 crore. Additionally, the Foreign Employment Temporary Life Insurance Pool added Rs 55.3 million to the national tally.

Market analysts note that while renewal premiums continue to sustain the industry's backbone, the widening disparity across provinces and individual companies highlights an ongoing need to bridge the insurance accessibility gap outside urban economic hubs like Bagmati.
