Foreign Investment in Nepal from China Increases Whereas India Declines

Although the inflow of foreign investment is in increasing trend in Nepal, investment from India is declining. In the first three months of the current FY, China invested nearly Rs 10 billion in Nepal however, India has invested merely Rs 200 million during the period.

As per the statistics of Department of Industries, the foreign investment has increased by 122 percent in the first quarter of the current FY compared to the corresponding period of the last FY. The data shows that Nepal received a foreign investment of Rs 4.83 billion in the first quarter of the last FY which is Rs 10.73 billion in this quarter.

In the last FY, a total of 24 countries invested in 129 projects whereas in the first quarter of the current FY, seven countries have invested nearly Rs 10.5 billion in 77 projects.

Out of them, China has invested the highest amount during the period. China is investing nearly Rs 9.99 billion in 67 projects. Such amount was Rs 1.27 billion for 63 projects in the last FY.

However, India invested merely Rs 200 million in the first quarter of the current FY. In the review period of the last FY, India invested Rs 2.45 billion in 17 projects.

Likewise, the other countries that have committed to invest in domestic projects are UK, Bangladesh, Japan, Pakistan and Australia.
