NEPSE Glows in year 2021; With all the highs and the lows

Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index that logged a historic records in the year 2021 increased by nearly 21 percent during the year. In the year, NEPSE index touched the peak of 3198.60 points on August 18 and logged the highest transaction amount of above Rs 21 billion.

In the year, where NEPSE index rose by 20.95 percent, the sensitive index rose by 18.19 percent. The index which was at 2087.27 points on December 31, 2020, closed with a gain of 437.27 points to 2524.50 points on December 29, 2021 the last trading day of the year.

In terms of the transaction amount, it increased by 291 percent. In the year 2020, NEPSE recorded a total of 484 billion in transaction amount which increased to Rs 1898 billion by the end of 2021. The amount increased by 1413 billion during the period.

If one considers no of transactions, it increased by above 2.5 times. In the year 2020, NEPSE registered a total of 5,540,261 number of transactions which grew to 19,914,532 by the end of 2021.

Along with the number and amount of transactions, market capitalization also grew by 27 percent to Rs 3567 billion from Rs 2808 billion of last year.

Which Sub-group logged the highest jump in sub-index?

In the year 2021, the finance subgroup logged the highest growth of 138.67 percent. The sub-index of the group that was at 869.43 (bottom of the list) in the last year reached to 2075.07 points on the year-end of 2021.

Similarly, the development bank logged 98.41 percent gain and hydropower 74.13 percent gain. followed by development banks

Meanwhile, the life insurance subgroup recorded the least growth of 5.49 percent. The sub-index of the group which was 13,471 points on 2020 reached 14,210 points in 2021 end.

Although NEPSE broke records in the year 2021, it also penned down few lows. At present, allegedly due to the policy adopted by Nepal Rastra Bank and the ongoing liquidity crisis, the NEPSE index has lost nearly 700 points from its record-breaking point.
