Government Bans Import of 10 Non-Essential Goods

The government of Nepal has banned the import of 10 merchandise in full phase. Issuing a notice on April 27, the Ministry of Industries, Commerce and Import banned the import of foreign liquors to poker cards.

The ministry has banned the import of liquors, motorcycles, television, poker cards and toys.

The import of such items has been banned due to skyrocketing imports and subsequently declining foreign reserves of the country.

As per the ministry, however the notice will not affect the import of such goods by foreign embassies working in Nepal for their own use. Moreover, it will also not affect the import process of these goods that have been approved before April 26.

The goods that have been banned till the end of current FY are;

  1. Kurkure, Lays and others snacks
  2. All types of liquor (except raw materials)
  3. Cigarettes and tobacco products
  4. Diamonds (except industrial raw materials)
  5. Mobile sets
  6. color television
  7. Jeeps, cars and vans (except ambulances and hearses, vehicles that carry dead bodies)
  8. Motorcycles above 250 CC
  9. All types of toys
  10. Poker cards.
