Deepening Structural Imbalances
The growing gap between incoming and outgoing goods highlights Nepal's heavy reliance on foreign markets to satisfy domestic demand.
- The 6.81-to-1 Ratio: The import-export ratio has worsened to 6.81. For every Rs 1 worth of goods Nepal exports, it must import goods worth Rs 6.81—a 2.56% increase in imbalance compared to the previous year.
- Shrinking Export Share: Even though total exports grew by 12.28%, their overall share in Nepal's total trade fabric actually shrank by 2.18%, dropping from 13.08% down to 12.80%.
- Dominant Import Share: Conversely, imports now command a staggering 87.20% of all foreign trade, up from 86.92% last year.
Economists warn that Nepal's trade deficit will continue to pose an escalating challenge unless the government successfully implements concrete, aggressive policies targeted at boosting domestic production and driving export promotion.
