Crackdown on Sub-standard Food: 142 Businesses Face Legal Action

The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) has filed legal cases against 142 industries and entrepreneurs for producing and selling substandard food during the 2082/83 fiscal year.

Following extensive nationwide monitoring, authorities pursued legal action at district levels and issued dozens of immediate market recalls.

Out of 3,365 samples collected nationwide, 127 (4.3%) failed to meet quality standards. The most frequently compromised daily essentials included:

Key Enforcement Actions

  • Market Recalls: The DFTQC issued 29 recall orders for heavily compromised items, removing unsafe processed drinking water, dalmoth, bhujia, biscuits, ice cream, honey, mustard oil, and spices from shelves.
  • Inspections: The department conducted 12,806 monitoring visits, utilizing mobile food laboratories for 123 on-the-spot tests.
  • Prosecution: Minor offenders received warnings, while those responsible for serious negligence face active prosecution under Section 38 of the Food Act.
  • Consumer Advisory: Buyers are heavily urged to verify product labels, manufacturing dates, and overall quality before purchasing, and to immediately report suspicious items to the department.
