Nepal Telecom along with other big internet service providers (ISPs) are importing monthly 1TBPS internet bandwidth. Currently, the companies import internet bandwidth from India to serve domestic customers. The internet bandwidth import doubled after the lockdown caused by COVID-19.
During the lockdown, Nepal used to import 400GBPS internet bandwidth which has increased to 1TBPS in recent time.
As per the data provided to Merolagani, Worldlink, the third biggest telecommunication company of Nepal, is importing 300GBPS internet bandwidth for its 550,000 customers.
Similarly, Subisu, Vianet and TechMinds Network is importing 100GBPS each. Meanwhile, Classic Tech is importing the lowest bandwidth of 55GBPS while Nepal Digital Services is importing 80GBPS internet bandwidth.
However, the biggest telecommunication companies of the country, Nepal Telecom and Ncell with their millions of users are importing just 120GBPS and 200GBPS respectively.
Nepal Telecom, once to break the bandwidth monopoly of India, brought internet bandwidth from China, however, it could not last long. Currently, Nepal imports internet bandwidth from Indian companies like Airtel, Reliance and Tata company.
Lately, Nepalese appetite for over-the-top content like tiktok, youtube, facebook, Instagram etc has caused a huge demand for fast-speed internet services. As per Nepal Telecommunication Authority, a total of 51 ISPs are serving 8,078,000 customers in the country.
